Glenys’ drawing before and after signing up for the Pet Portrait Master Kit
Glenys has always loved drawing, but sixty years of work and family didn't leave much room to develop her skills.
She was confident drawing a solid black and white pencil sketch. But colour was a different story entirely: "Any attempt to add colour was a disaster."
In 2025, her daughter gave her the Pet Portrait Master Kit as a birthday gift. As she worked through the material, colour finally started to make sense.
A few of the moments that shifted things for her:
· Learning to identify the actual colours in a reference image
· Understanding how to layer colours in sequence to keep highlights and build depth
· Using different stroke techniques to build texture
· Being willing to work through the "ugly" middle stage of a drawing instead of stopping there
· Leaving the fine details until last, focussing on tonal values first.
One of her biggest breakthroughs had nothing to do with colour theory at all. She switched from pastel paper to Grafix film, and the difference was immediate.
"I am finding it an easier task selecting colours now that I am using the film - and my pencils are lasting longer too."
The drawing of her dog Big Ted before and after the course perfectly shows her transformation. Where Big Ted before feels a bit flat and rough, Big Ted after has a beautiful sense of depth and realism.
Glenys is still working through the course between trips (she travels for dog agility trials), picking up new techniques as she goes and posting her progress for feedback along the way.
