My favourite drawing surface…

Let’s talk about drafting film.

If you’ve been following my tutorials you’ll know that drafting film is my favourite surface to work on.

It’s so lovely and smooth and it allows for all the beautiful crisp details.

The easiest type of drafting film to find is Grafix Duralar - this is student grade film, it’s great quality and I used it in all my early commissions.

But the one disadvantage with Duralar is that it doesn’t take very many layers, maybe 3-5 at most, depending on your pencil pressure.

You can still achieve a great result with Duralar, but there is that limitation.

If you’re working with Duralar and feel like you’re ready to upgrade, the good quality professional grade film can be tricky to find, depending on where you are in the world.

So, to help you out, here are some links to sites I’ve found that stock the professional Grafix drafting film in AUS, UK, USA and Canada:

AUS - Grafix drafting film .005 double matte

UK - Grafix drafting film .005 double matte

USA - Grafix drafting film .005 double matte

CANADA - Grafix drafting film .005 double matte

*If you’ve come across the professional grade Grafix drafting film in your local area (particularly if you’re in the EU or South America) please let me know and I’ll add it to the list!

It goes without saying that Duralar is still a great product, so don’t feel like you need to buy more supplies if you’re not ready.

I intentionally did some of my fur tutorials using Duralar so that I could demonstrate exactly how to get around its shortcomings!

However if you’re ready to try the professional grade Grafix film, you’ll find it allows more layers and depth to your drawings and will definitely help you get to that next level.

Till next time, happy drawing!
